Presentation
From the skies above Berlin, angels Damiel and Cassiel listen to the innermost thoughts and fears of the city’s inhabitants. In Wings of Desire, German director Wim Wenders envisions what transpires when one of these celestial beings longs to experience the human condition. When Damiel falls for trapeze artist Marion, he sheds his immortality and embarks on a journey of discovery into the pleasures of human life and consciousness.
Inspired by the cinematic classic, choreographer Bruno Bouché has crafted a full-length ballet that explores the profound mysteries of incarnation, the very essence of dance itself. He draws on iconic themes from the original film, following its dramatic arc before venturing beyond the film’s conclusion. The piece is set to a rich and eclectic musical tapestry, featuring works by Bach, Sibelius, and Steve Reich alongside sounds from ensemble Anohni and the Johnsons and composer Jamie Man.
Through a blend of classical dance vocabulary, contemporary influences, and dramatic storytelling, the choreographer captures the daily wonder experienced by each human being, the sensations that conjure this life force: the breath, the suspension of the body, impulse, frissons on the skin, the brush of a caress, the landing of a leap. Bruno Bouché brings together the entire Ballet company for an intensely poetic artistic journey—an invitation to remember what truly fuels our desire to live.
