Presentation
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. When the king dies suddenly, his brother Claudius seizes the thrown and marries the queen, Gertrude, a hasty union that deeply disturbs the prince, Hamlet. When the ghost of Hamlet’s father appears, revealing that Claudius poisoned him and demanding vengeance, the prince spirals into madness and pulls away from his beloved Ophelia. Determined to expose his uncle, Hamlet arranges for travelling actors to perform The Murder of Gonzago, staging a death mirroring his father’s to observe Claudius’s reaction. Hamlet’s vengeful quest claims many victims—some completely innocent—as he grapples with existential questions about life’s meaning: to be or not to be.
Born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York, Bryan Arias brings his contemporary dance style—infused with theatrical flourishes and dreamlike qualities—to the OnR Ballet’s production of Hamlet.Though rarely adapted by choreographers, Arias tackles Shakespeare’s masterpiece by preserving its psychological depth while refreshing the narrative through Ophelia’s perspective, in a sublime setting where Elizabethan references seamlessly blend with minimalist elements. Musical director Tanguy de Williencourt leads the Orchestre national de Mulhouse through an evocative program featuring works by Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, and Shostakovich, creating a powerful soundtrack for one of literature’s greatest tragedies.
