Brahms’ folk songs bring the Bohemian spirit to life from a time when composers were captivated by nomadic communities and their musical tradition. Through the prism of the German Romantic choral style, Romani music lends its proud rhythms, folk inflections and cheerful nostalgia to the delicate style of the great German composer. The OnR Chorus performs the four-voice version along with acapella pieces by other European composers, including Romania’s Dariu Pop and Italy’s Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, testifying to Roma culture’s long influence on western choral music.
