Presentation

Music and dance offer a welcome distraction to Hansel and his little sister Gretel from their life of hunger, hardship and housework. But their burned-out parents aren’t always amused by their playful bickering. When their mother knocks over a jug of milk, she sends her children out to the haunted forest to look for strawberries. Left to their own devices in the woods where appearances can be deceptive, the starving brother and sister are attracted by the most irresistible of temptations—a house made of cakes and sugar—conjured up by an evil enchantress whose powers of trickery and seduction are second to none. Unfortunately for Hansel and Gretel, her guilty pleasure is feasting on the tender flesh of innocent children…

Traditionally performed at Christmastime in Germany, this musical fairytale inspired by one of the most popular stories in the Brothers Grimm collection has enchanted young and old alike for over a century. Engelbert Humperdinck shows his innate sense of wonder in his opulent yet subtle score where Wagnerian techniques meet magnificent soaring melodies. Performed online in winter 2020, the production staged by Pierre-Emmanuel Rousseau leaves out the archetypal gingerbread house to focus more on the cruelty that runs through the original tale, embodied here by a “witch” full of surprises. A fresh take on this great classic in the capable hands of conductor Christoph Koncz.
