Presentation

English playwright Sarah Kane has left her mark on theatre with poetic, powerful and incisive works. Premiered in 2000, a few months after her untimely death at twenty-eight, 4.48 Psychosis is a poignant inquiry into depression. Poetry, anger, black humor mingle in this portrait of a woman struggling with the disease. The title refers to the early morning hour when, according to the writer, the nascent day mingles with despair. The strength and beauty of the opera by English composer Philip Venables enthralled critics and overwhelmed audiences upon its premiere and subsequent run at the Royal Opera House in London.

A work for the young and young at heart, a brilliant proof that contemporary music can appeal to all of us by evoking the current world, the difficulty of finding meaning, and our most intimate desires. In this subtle production by American director Ted Huffman, performers and two percussionists express the young woman's inner voices for a deeply touching experience. Richard Baker will be conducting the Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg.
