Presentation
In the kingdom of playing cards, the son of the King of Clubs cannot laugh, and it’s literally killing him. While some courtiers strive to heal him, the ambitious king’s niece Clarice harbors more murderous designs. During a performance meant to provoke laughter, the prince guffaws when the witch Fata Morgana falls flat on her face. Mortified, she curses the prince: henceforth, he will be infatuated with a love for three oranges. What follows is a series of trails that will push the prince to his limits but ultimately lead him to his future bride…
The Love for Three Oranges is based on a satirical play in mock commedia dell’arte style. Like a funhouse mirror reflecting the flaws of humankind back at us, the opera unfolds in a riot of whimsical twists and turns. Prokofiev’s genius shines through his sharp contrasts, dramatic flair, and dazzling orchestral range. L’Amour des trois oranges is a celebration of the composer’s inventive spirit, unbound by tradition. Accompanied by conductor Aziz Shokhakimov, director Laurent Pelly—who has a talent for bringing out the most energetic performances from his actors—takes unabashed delight in presenting this madcap tale absolutely brimming with humor.
