The gentle and gracious Alexis is in love with the tomboyish Hermosa. That the mismatched couple are respectively played by a soprano and a tenor is already a clue to the audience that all might not be what it seems in this one-act “gender romp” by Offenbach. Expect laughter and fluidity aplenty in this piece that was ahead of its time!
