Mare Nostrum—what the Romans called the Mediterranean Sea—stands as a symbol of our original cultures and a central protagonist in our interwoven love (and hate) stories. The Mediterranean, the ancient “sea between the lands”, is both a tragic theatre of conflict and the stage of heroic adventures embarked on through the ages by the societies that people its shores. Some artists from Mediterranean countries like to examine their own plural identity, nurtured by extraordinary stories. Some take a stand against the perilous state of our sea and the destruction of its vital ecosystems. Still others shine a light on migration flows and the aspirations of the displaced, examining how these impact our very humanity.
