Arioste's Orlando Furioso, an epic poem and founding work of the Italian Renaissance, was not only a literary triumph, it also inspired painters, sculptors, musicians, and other artists in their endeavors. Handel adapted this brilliant material to win over the fussy London crowd. The composer chose a particularly colorful episode to adapt -- Ruggiero's stay on the island ruled by the enchantress Alcina, who turns unwelcome visitors into animals, trees, or rocks. This is the setting for an uninhibited musical journey, a series of arias each more beautiful than the last. Four exceptional voices -- Ana Durlovski, Helene Guilmette, Diana Haller and Marina Viotti -- have been assembled to do justice to these vocal fireworks. They are supported by Serena Sinigaglia and Christopher Moulds, who draw us into a fantasy world which they know better than anyone.
