Handel composed his first oratorio in 1707 at a time when the Vatican had banned operatic performances in Rome—which didn’t stop the young German-British composer from taking a cue from the aesthetic conventions and existential themes of Neapolitan opera seria when writing this exquisite and masterful Baroque composition. When Bellezza (Beauty) is seduced by Piacere (Pleasure), Tempo (Time) and Disinganno (Truth) enter the scene to open her eyes to the fleeting nature of earthly pleasures.
