Over the past two years, human relationships have been restricted and disrupted and, for a while, technology and the virtual world seemed to gain the upper hand. However, this situation has also been the driving force behind a profound examination of the “self”, privacy, our relationships with others and our individual responsibilities. The fortieth edition of Musica was conceived in this physical and personal, emotional and present space. The rich and diverse festival examines the role of the subject in music and the relationship of music to the self—how the “me” can resonate between the notes. To address these issues of musical intimacy, the OnR and Musica are teaming up to stage a magnificent opera by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho as well as a musical theater production directed by Samuel Achache which shows how individuality is always caught up in a collective movement.
