Gabriel Fauré’s Trio is considered to be one of his masterpieces. Yet, at the age of 77, he doubted his abilities: “I don’t have two notes in mind that are worth writing. Have I exhausted my capabilities?” The American composer Amy Beach also wrote her Trio towards the end of her life. It draws the listener into an aural world richly interwoven with European and American influences. Placed between these two works, Maurice Ravel's Sonata is a tribute to Debussy and uses a deliberately pared-back language.
