Biography

Originally from London, he studied music at King's College, Cambridge. He lead an international career in opera, concerts and recitals. He is particularly known for his interpretation of the Passions according to St. Matthew and St. John by JS Bach and as Evangelist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Simon Rattle and staged by Peter Sellars in Berlin, Salzburg, New York and BBC Proms. He has appeared in opera staged by Peter Brook, Katie Mitchell, Mark Morris and Deborah Warner; in The Corridor and The Cure by Harrison Birtwistle at the Aldeburgh Festival and Lindbury Theater, Covent Garden; as Captain Vere (Billy Budd by Britten) and as Evangelist (Saint Matthew Passion) at the Glyndebourne festival; Third Angel / John (Written on Skin by George Benjamin) at Covent Garden in London. Most recently he took part in Tansy Davies' world premiere of Cave with the London Sinfonietta. Among his plans is a new production of Death of Venice at Covent Garden. In concert, he performed with the main international orchestras; he was Artist in Residence at the Berliner Philharmonic (2017/18) after having held the same position with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra (2016/17). With the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment he explores the Passions according to Saint John and Saint Matthew by Bach. He has performed in recitals all over the world: Schubert's three lieder cycles in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Birmingham, London, Liverpool, Paris, Tokyo, Vienna and New York as well as at Schubertiades by Schwarzenberg. He has regular partners Kristian Bezuidenhout, Jonathan Biss, Imogen Cooper, Julius Drake, Till Fellner, Simon Lepper, Paul Lewis, Roger Vignoles and Andrew West. Several composers have written for him including Sally Beamish, Harrison Birtwistle, Jonathan Dove, Thomas Larcher, Nico Muhly, Alec Roth, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Huw Watkins and Ryan Wigglesworth. His discography includes Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, Haydn's Die Schöpfung with Bernard Haitink and the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, songs by Beethoven, Haydn and Mozart with Kristian Bezuidenhout (Harmonia Mundi), arias by Händel with the English Concert, Schubert with Paul Lewis, Dichterliebe by Schumann, Serenade and Nocturne by Britten, Dies Natalis by Finzi with the Britten Sinfonia. He is artistic director of the St Endellion Summer Music Festival in Cornwall. At the OnR, he sang Schubert's Winter Travel in recital in 2017.
