Biography

Franco-German David Hermann has established himself as one of the leading opera and theatre directors of his generation. He was nominated as Best Director at the 2018 International Opera Awards in London for his Krenek Trilogy at Oper Frankfurt, which won in the category 'Rediscovered Work'.

Most recent engagements include Warten Auf Heute (Oper Frankfurt), a production with works by Frank Martin and Arnold Schoenberg, Verdi's Falstaff (Opéra national de Montpellier), Das Lied von der Erde (Oper Stuttgart), revivals of Simone Boccanegra (Royal Opera House Copenhagen, Opéra national de Montpellier), Lohengrin (Staatstheater Nurnberg), Ariadne auf Naxos (Opéra de Lausanne, Semperoper Dresden) and the world premiere of of 'Tis Pity she is a Whore at Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf.

Other opera productions include Mozart's Ascanio in Alba (Salzburger Festspiele), L'Italiana in Algeri (Nancy and Montpellier), Janáček's Věc Makropulos, Lachenmann's Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern and Iannis Xenakis' Oresteia (Deutsche Oper Berlin), La Traviata and Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Opernhaus Zürich), Inamori's Wir aus Glas (Munich Biennale, co-produced with Deutsche Oper Berlin), Charpentier's Médée, Monteverdi's Orfeo, Combattimenti and Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in patria, Ravel's L'heure espagnole and de Falla's La vida breve (Oper Frankfurt), Honegger's Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher, La Bohème and Pique Dame (Theater Basel), Berlioz' Les Troyens and Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov (Staatstheater Karlsruhe), Macbeth (Aalto Theater Essen), Chaya Czernowin's Pnima (Lucerne Festival), Tchaikovsky's Iolanta (Opéra national de Lorraine) and Pilar Jurado's La Página en Blanco (Teatro Real Madrid).

Future highlights include new productions at Opéra de Lyon, Oper Stuttgart and Deutsche Oper Berlin as well as world premieres at Aalto Theater Essen and at Schwetzinger Festspiele.
