Presentation

The composer of the opera Guercœur was one of a kind. The son of one of the first editors of the French daily Le Figaro, Albéric Magnard discovered both his vocation as a musician and his civic responsibility at an early age. A secularist, Dreyfus supporter and feminist, he was prepared to lay down his life for his ideals. Indeed, he died at the outbreak of World War One, defending his home from German troops marching towards Paris. Like his opera, his correspondence reflects his moral and political convictions. During this concert reading, some of Magnard’s most important letters will be read by the actor and director Marina Vlach, his great-granddaughter, while the Duo Ingolfsson-Stoupel will perform his magnificent violin sonata, which helped to make him a legend in his own lifetime.
