Presentation

Being the king’s son isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, as Prince Ramiro learns the hard way. It’s the night of the grand ball arranged by his father to find his son a wife, but the prince wants to be loved for who he is, not what he possesses. To test his suitors, he dresses as his valet and goes to Don Magnifico’s castle where he is rudely received. There he meets Magnifico’s daughter, the vain Clorinda, and her stepdaughter Angelina who is forced to be the maid in her own home. Covered in soot, she is known by her family as Cenerentolina, but beneath this layer of ash beats a pure and innocent heart desperate to be loved. Inspired by Rossini’s Italian Cenerentola, here comes Cenerentolina, with the same Rossini spirit but condensed and set to French lyrics for a French audience without subtitles. In this production aimed at a younger audience, directors Sandra Pocceschi and Giacomo Strada borrow the iconic elements of the Cinderella fairy-tale as told by Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm and Walt Disney—the pumpkin, the clock that strikes twelve, the glass slipper—and ingeniously flip them on their head. Pure enchantment from beginning to end!
