In the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, bohemian influences inspired painting, the decorative arts, menus of fashionable restaurants, ballrooms and, of course, many a Viennese operetta. If grand opera centred more than one of its oeuvres on the figure of the “Gypsy”, the colourful operetta scene was awash with plots featuring genuine/fake Bohemians set to music infused with traces of their folklore. From The Gypsy Baron to The Csárdás Princess, Viennese and Hungarian operettas liked to depict whimsical Bohemians and aristocrats bewitched by liberty personified. On the occasion of the Arsmondo Roma Festival, singers from the Opéra national du Rhin’s Opéra Studio will perform nostalgic and catchy numbers by the likes of composers such as Strauss, Lehár and Kálmán.
