Presentation

Seville's men only have one name on their lips: Carmen, the sultry tobacco factory worker known for inflaming passions and turning heads. When she sets her sights on Don José, throwing him a flower, the love-struck soldier deserts his military duties and his sweetheart Micaëla, who uses his dying mother to win him back. But falling in love with the beautiful temptress is dangerous business as Don José learns to his cost. Carmen sings that "love is a rebellious bird that none can tame"---a description more befitting to herself. When Carmen's infatuation shifts to a dashing bullfighter, Don José, fueled by jealous rage, kills her during a bloody corrida. One of the most popular operas ever written, bursting with melodies that play like a hit parade (chorus of urchins, Habanera, Seguidilla, Flower Song, Toreador's Song), Carmen is a masterpiece that has never fallen out of fashion. Imagined by French author Prosper Mérimée, the beguiling figure of Carmen has become, through Bizet's opera, a universal and uncompromising symbol of women's liberation. Stage director Jean-François Sivadier captures the spirit of this fiery drama in this carnivalesque and dramatic production.
