Presentation

The OnR Ballet is opening the Opéra national du Rhin's latest season with a production that won unanimous acclaim when it debuted here in February 2018: Chaplin. This ballet, created in 2010 by Mario Schröder for his company at the Oper Leipzig, is the first ever dedicated to Charlie Chaplin, a cinematic legend who was also a creative genius and visionary humanist. Schröder's piece explores Chaplin's role in society, his view of the world, his shrewd understanding of technology and totalitarian politics, and the shortcomings of the artistic milieu. He has devised a touching and tender piece that goes beyond the fortunes and personality of this cinema giant to explore universal themes and the recesses of the human heart. Set to an eclectic score spanning the music of John Adams, Leoncavallo, Brahms, Wagner, Barber, Britten and many others, this ballet pays homage to a cinematographer who approached every scene with the exacting rigor of a choreographer.
