Inspired by the well-known Brothers Grimm fairytale, Hansel and Gretel centers on two near-destitute children sent out into the forest by their mother to forage for food. There, they encounter a strange, hostile world and a terrifying child-eating witch. Humperdinck -- Wagner's former assistant and a huge admirer of his opus -- transformed this fairytale into an enchanting and poetic work of opera. While Hansel and Gretel was immediately popular with children in Weimar, the future masterpiece charmed adult audiences too. Anaïk Morel and Lenneke Ruiten play the young protagonists in this new staging by Pierre-Emmanuel Rousseau, conducted by Marko Letonja, a specialist of this repertoire. The perfect fairytale opera for a festive family outing!
