Presentation

An opera adaptation of the novel Until the Lions: Echoes from the Mahabharata by writer Karthika Naïr, this world premiere by French composer Thierry Pécou, commissioned by the Opéra national du Rhin, is at the heart of the third ARSMONDO edition, which is devoted to India. Exploring themes of the great Mahabharata epic, the founding narrative of Hinduism, Until the Lions gives voice to the women who have suffered most from rivalries, destruction, war, the violence of power and patriarchal domination. This contemporary work makes many references to music from India and wider South Asia. Inspired by the poet Édouard Glissant, Thierry Pécou creates a musical tout-monde expressed through song and spoken word, from recitative to psalmody. This world premiere presents a production and choreography by Indian artist Shobana Jeyasingh, who has lived in London for many years. Hence, dance has a special role in this show, which brings together artists from Jeyasingh's company and the Ballet of the OnR. Young conductor Marie Jacquot is leading the Orchestre symphonique de Mulhouse for the first time.
