Presentation

This key opera by Giuseppe Verdi was preceded by Rigoletto and followed by La traviata, which due to their success are often seen as his trilogia popolare. However, Il Trovatore stands out for its spectacular and gloomy subject, where the inherited hatred shared through blood ties never seems to end in a society divided between the aristocracy and the Romani community.

The tragic story shows how permeable this division really is: Just after his execution, Manrico's real identity, which was hidden from him by his presumed mother -- the strong, loving and desperate Azucena, who as a child witnessed the barbaric murder of her own mother by the di Luna family -- is revealed to his worst enemy and executioner, Count di Luna. Manrico was none other than di Luna's own brother, kidnapped by Azucena when he was only a few months old.

This production is the OnR debut of the duo of Jean-Philippe Clarac and Olivier Deloeuil, founders of the LAB. The Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg will be conducted by Daniele Callegari, who is returning after his success with Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci in 2017.
