Centre Chorégraphique National
The prestigious title of National Choreography Centre (Centre Chorégraphique National - CCN), awarded by the French Ministry of Culture, covers a certain number of structures in the arts, each directed by an outstanding artist from the world of choreography. Through their artistic colour and originality, the structures present the diversity of languages, styles and creative modes within today's cultural landscape in France. The 19 centres develop various artistic projects focused on choreographic creation, but also on setting the repertoire in perspective. They bring productions to a wider audience, share the work environment (Accueil Studio) and develop choreography and training. These public missions are entrusted by the State and the local and regional authorities which provide financial backing in the framework of regional planning and policies fostering dance activities. The aim is to give artists the backing of a true policy in favour of artistic development within a dedicated work environment.
The Ballet of the Opéra national du Rhin was awarded the title of National Choreography Centre (CCN) in 1985 and remains an exception in the network in that it is the only CCN to be hosted by an Opera House. This choice, backed by the State and the local and regional authorities in Alsace, has fulfilled a desire to acknowledge ballets of the repertoire and neo-classical dance. This is accomplished side by side with contemporary dance companies, thereby fostering exchange and emulation between the different practices.
Each centre follows through a policy of creation and broadening the audience both within its own region, and also throughout France and beyond national borders. Each centre has its own specific repertoire while developing innovative dance-based projects.
Accueil Studio: a mission to share
Since 1998, the Department of Music and Dance of the Ministry of Culture, has given the CCNs the task of assisting independent companies through a programme called Accueil Studio. The aim is to provide the companies selected with the means afforded professional productions through material and/or financial support (studios, backing through co-production etc.), foster contacts and exchanges and guide the emergence of innovative artistic projects. In this respect, the CCNs act as resource centres for choreography in France.
A financial envelope is allocated to each CCN to help bring the projects of the selected companies and choreographers to fruition.
The Ballet of the Opéra national du Rhin has been committed to this policy since 2001. It has supported the work of choreographers from Alsace, and indeed the whole of France. The aim is, above all, to give projects substance, foster encounters, forge partnerships and enable dance to flourish throughout France.
