The Temple of the Golden Pavilion

The Temple of the Golden Pavilion / Toshiro Mayuzumi

[New production]
French creation
Coproduction avec Tokyo Nikikai Opera Foundation

Opera in three acts
Libretto by the composer and Claus H. Henneberg after the novel by Yukio Mishima
Premiered on 23rd June 1976 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin

Japanese novelist Yukio Mishima has drawn his disturbing novel from a real-life news item recounting the destructive power of beauty. A young Buddhist monk set fire to the “Golden Pavilion”, a beautiful temple in Kyoto that had survived wars and the ravages of time. His insane, incomprehensible act sent shock waves through post-war Japan. Toshiro Mayuzumi, a close friend of the writer, composed an opera where the darkest recesses of the monk’s soul are expressed in a sombre, spellbinding flow of music illuminated by bright flashes. The opera’s premiere at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin in 1976 was a true event revealing the talent of a major artist drawn by mystic spheres. This new production, directed by Conductor Paul Daniel at the head of the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra and Stage Director Amon Miyamoto, both appearing for the first time at the OnR, is the French creation of this powerful work where the chorus’ key role reminds us of Ancient Greece. The Temple of the Golden Pavilion is at the heart of the first edition of the arsmondo  Festival.
