Eugene Onegin

Eugene Onegin / Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

[New production]

Lyric scenes in 3 acts and 7 tableaux
Libretto by the composer and Konstantin Shilovsky after Alexander Pushkin
Premiered on 29th March 1879 in Moscow

The song Tatyana sings in the middle of the night as she is writing to the indifferent charmer who has touched her heart; Lensky and Onegin’s duet before their fatal duel, such good friends that they need death to destroy the forbidden attraction binding them; and Onegin’s final despair as he realises he has wasted his life when he meets Tatyana once more after years spent apart. Just three deeply moving moments in Tchaikovsky’s melancholic opera and a taste of more to come. The composer has turned Pushkin’s novel in verse into an exceptional musical accomplishment triggering unforgettable impressions of Russia. The opera marks young Stage Director Frederic Wake-Walker’s debut at the OnR and Marko Letonja conducts the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he is the Musical Director, for the lyrical event closing the season.
