La divisione del mondo

La divisione del mondo / Giovanni Legrenzi

French creation
Coproduction with the Opéra national de Lorraine

Opera in three acts
Libretto by Giulio Cesare Corradi / Premiered in Venice on 4 February 1675

The Baroque period is resplendent with wonders that we are still unearthing. After Claudio Monteverdi and Francesco Cavalli, the Italian composer Giovanni Legrenzi (1626-1690) is the third great name of this century that saw the birth of opera. We know that he created seventeen works, although for many, only the title remains. Fortunately, this is not the case with La divisione del mondo which was highly acclaimed in the years following its premiere in Venice in 1675.
Orchestra conductor Christophe Rousset, who has constantly given a new lease of life to the beauty of 17th-century works, interprets this score at the head of his ensemble Les Talens Lyriques. For this French premiere, Jetske Mijnssen, who is making her début at the Opéra national du Rhin, is directing a work where frivolity and passion abound, with Juno's jealousy and the disastrous consequences of Venus' destructive beauty among the Olympian gods as she rises from the waves and Jupiter, having defeated the Titans, is ready to divide up and allocate the different parts the world.
