Werther

Werther / Jules Massenet

[New production at the OnR]

Lyrical drama in four acts and five tableaux
Libretto by Edouard Blau, Paul Millet and Georges Hartmann, after Goethe
Premiered on 16th February 1892 in Vienna (Hofoper)
Production by the Opernhaus Zürich

With his adaptation from the epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther by Goethe, Jules Massenet composed one of the works most performed on today’s world stages. It is one of the rare French operas whose popularity rivals that of Puccini, Verdi and Wagner. The romantic hero’s disconsolate solitude is expressed through airs whose beauty and sincerity take your breath away. Dreaming makes for a gentle, but temporary haven, an ideal springtime which cannot withstand the face of harsh reality: Charlotte cannot give her love to Werther. Two women, Conductor Ariane Matiakh, leading the Mulhouse Symphony Orchestra, and Stage Director Tatjana Gürbaca take the gloomy hero by the hand towards the ultimate state of peace.
