The Seven Deadly Sins

The Seven Deadly Sins... / Arnold Schönberg - Kurt Weill

[New production]

Cabaret as a hub of illusions and obscure, forbidden dreams. Three women call to us through their strange stories where night, the moon and solitude interweave with pleasure, money and success. How can we resist following them to the whisky bar? All is illusion and mirage and will vanish as soon as light returns. And yet… David Pountney, with the complicity of conductor Roland Kluttig, brings together 3 short gems imbued with scandal where dance, song and music evoke mystery and the meaning of life. The Premiere of Schönberg’s Pierrot lunaire and Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins (before the Parisian audience of Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in 1933) and Mahagonny - Ein Songspiel disconcerted opinion and gave rise to enthusiasm and debate. Their specific piquancy still stirs up appealing, yet disturbing flights of fancy.
