Arsmondo Japan

A spring festival at the Opéra national du Rhin

Every springtime from 2018, ARSMONDO will welcome works and artists from other countries in cooperation with local, regional, national and international partners – an opportunity to look beyond our borders to other continents.

In the spring of 2018, the first edition of
ARSMONDO is dedicated to Japan, a country fascinated by Europe in general and France in particular. Several events have been scheduled for this first edition including the French premiere of the opera The Temple of the Golden Pavilion by Toshiro Mayuzumi. Concerts, recitals, readings, debates, encounters, workshops and projects will all be on the menu. The full programme will be revealed next January, but we wanted to give you a taster of what’s to come.

Exploring the unknown is the common thread running through arsmondo. In a world made up of multifarious identities, many people are called on to move, live, work and pursue their education far from home. Flexibility is the key to living in the early 21st century. But in which continent, country, town and landscape do our roots lie? We absorb languages and cultural and artistic traditions foreign to our own, yet we continue to cherish the memory of our country of origin. We build up images of the world in our minds with myriad vibrant strata.

For this first edition of
ARSMONDO, the presence of works by the great writers Yukio Mishima, Yasunari Kawabata and Haruki Murakami, composers Toshiro Mayuzumi, Toru Takemitsu and Toshio Hosokawa all represent original “voices” from the Land of the Rising Sun, underlining the intense dialogue between Japan and Europe.

Curiosity about foreign lands, welcoming people from afar, meeting cultures that give us greater depth and exchange as a source of unexpected developments. These are the fundamental values promoted by
